Today I had brunch at HAAM Caribbean Plant Cuisine, located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NYC, with a friend. We ordered Curry Chik'n Wontons, which is "curry-infused plant based chikn won ton drizzled with tamarind chutney and cucumber apple chutney". For entrees, we ordered sweet plaintain boat, which is "ripe plantain boat stuffed with plant based beef and jalapeno queso, purple cabbage slaw, tamarind chutney and microgreens" and jerk tamarind oyster mushroom burger which is "crispy oyster mushrooms sitting over purple cabbage slaw, pickles and jerk tamarind sauce on a pretzel bread". The non-alcoholic drinks were sorrel - fresh juice which is "crafted from the hibiscus petals" and sorrel blossom which is "blend of sorrel juice, tamarind, lime, pineapple, ginger beer, almond syrup, and a hint of peppa sauce, with unique botanicals like tulsi and lion's mane".
The drinks were delicious! Sorrel - fresh juice was a sweet juice. The non-alcoholic cocktail, sorrel blossom was both sweet and tart from the tamarind. I would recommend sorrel blossom. It was different and fun! All of the food was delicious too! The sweet plantain boat is a must try "wow" dish. The plantain "boat" was excellent. Every bite of the boat had so much in it. There was enough filing so that it was satisfying. Loved the lentils in it. The lentils went so well with the plantain base. Made like this it didn't even feel like I was eating lentils and plantains. The jalapeno queso sauce was so delicious. I could taste the jalapeno. The queso balanced out the plantain's sweetness perfectly. The cabbage gave the perfect crunch because the plantain and lentils were soft. The wontons were the perfect appetizer. It was crunchy and light. The sauces really made the dish perfect. The burger was also very delicious. The mushroom in the burger was not under or over fried, and it was cooked perfectly. The jerk tamarind sauce was delicious. It went so well with the burger. The pretzel bun and the jerk tamarind sauce made this burger so delicious and different from a burger at any other restaurant. The yuca fries that came with the burger were the cherry on top. The fries were so perfectly cooked and the dipping sauce for the fries was so delicious. Now I'll want yuca fries and the dipping sauce instead of regular fries next time. The flavors in every dish were so delicious.
My friend and I also agreed that the meal was so satisfying and we made the best ordering decisions. The decor had a cozy and comfortable feel to it. The bathroom was so clean and spacious. It was a wonderful Sunday lunch. The only recommendation I would have would be to have the music at a lower volume for brunch, as it was still early. I am so grateful that I got to try HAAM, as I had heard the owner speak during a vegan entrepreneurial session at the NJ VegFest in 2023 in Secaucus, NJ.
I left around 10:30am to go for lunch at HAAM. The J train had modified service, so I decided to walk to the next stop, Crescent St., that the train was operating. They had a shuttle bus available, but the weather was sunny, so I decided to walk. I had walked from this station before when I was returning during rush hour when the J train skips stops. Got off at Lorimer St station. It was less than a 10 minute walk to HAAM.
