Lunch at NY Dosa - Food Cart at Washington Sq Park

In the morning, I saw an Instagram post that the NY Dosas vegan food cart will be at its location, Washington Square Park, during lunch time. This was on Saturday, October 19th. I had been following NY Dosas for more than a fews years and had always checked if timing would work out to go to the NY Dosa Man's food cart every time I had visited NYC for the day. His food cart is really famous. If you search lengendary dosa man of NYC, he will come up. I couldn't believe that this was going to happen! I changed my Chelsea plans and decided to explore this area. See my other post about my train ride there and exploring the park.

I got to the food cart at noon. This food cart always has a line. I waited for about 45 minutes, but the weather was beautiful, and it didn't feel long.

I made it!

I ordered Special Pondicherry Dosa and Vegan Drumstick, mild spice level. The special pondicherry dosa is a "crepe made of rice and lentil and filled with veggies and potatoes". The drumstick is "made of soy protein served on sugar cane stick". This food was worth the hype. It was a 15 out of 10 if that could be a possible rating. Everything was fresh. Nothing was oily, like it usually is in Indian restaurants and even in home cooked food. He knew how to make it, so he did not need oil or red chilli to make it taste good. This was not a fast food or heavy lunch. I could have this everyday because it was so healthy and fresh.

The potato filling was not fried in onions and oil, which is usually the case in Indian restaurants. The potatoes were plain and mildly spiced, yet it was PERFECTLY cooked and spiced. The best I have ever had. I tried to take a photo of the filling. See image below. I could tell these potatoes were fresh because it was so soft. The mild spices were probably tumeric and coriander. The tumeric gives the potatoes the yellow color. He laid out the dosa on the pan, and then put a special spice blend on it for the one I had gotten. Then he put the potatoes and salad in the dosa and closed it. I liked how he literally just put fresh salad in the dosa. The dosa was crispy. It also tasted so fresh, like the batter was prepared in the morning. It was probably also the perfect batter. The dosa batter is made of soaked lentils and rice, which are blended after being soaked.

The dosa came with a coconut chutney, which is a dipping sauce, and sambhar, which is a lentil soup with vegetables. The drumstick came with a mint chutney. The chutneys or dipping sauces were so fresh and delicious too. (See image of the chutney. I missed to take a picture of it before I started eating.) The coconut chutney must have been made with fresh coconut because it's the best I have ever had. It had a natural coconut sweet taste and melted in my mouth. The mint chutney must have had lemon in it too, because it had both tastes in it. Again this was just as fresh and delicious. Both chutneys were well made, and I'm glad I didn't ask for spicy, so that I could take in all the flavors.

The drumstick was delicious too. I'm glad I tried it. I liked how it was on a sugar cane stick, which was edible. The drumstick was soft and well cooked. It went perfectly with the mint chutney. This was the best lunch ever. It was not heavy either and I didn't have a food coma afterwards. I was full too! I have to go back. This was a legit "feed the soul" experience. (My godsister and I have another place in Philadelphia that "feeds the soul" We came up with this way to describe it.)
